The Bakersfield College football team will take on Saddleback College in its season home opener at Memorial Stadium on Saturday. Saddleback is currently ranked No.1 in the National Division of the Western State Conference and expected to repeat as a postseason bowl contender as it opened their season with a 21-14 victory over a good Allan Hancock College team that is consistently in contention for postseason play.
The Bakersfield College wrestling team, two-time defending state champion, will open its season on Saturday with a six-team wrestling tournament at Gil Bishop Sports Arena. The tournament is a round-robin format set to begin at 10 a.m. with each team expected to wrestle at least three rounds, maybe four.
Bakersfield College's new basketball coach is not the person who was reportedly hired in April of last semester. Rich Hughes, a former coach at Allen Hancock College in Santa Maria for nine years, was hired as BC's head basketball coach in June. Hughes, 36, was raised primarily in Orange County, but his sophomore and junior years of high school were in Bakersfield at West High, when his father was an assistant basketball coach at Cal State Bakersfield.
Bakersfield College beat Merced in season opener 30-27, 30-19, 30-27 at home on Sept. 2 as coach Carl Ferreira strives to start a new era in woman's volleyball at BC. Ferreira is the fifth coach in five years at BC, and he comes in with experience coaching in the Pac-10 Conference.
