Gas leak led to two-day closure of cafeteria

A gas leak was detected on the Bakersfield College campus by Amber Chiang, director of marketing and public relations, in front of the Campus Center, in the grassy area next to the Student Services Building, Oct. 29, around 11:58 a.m. "I was actually working with Univision to shoot our new Spanish-language commercial," said Chiang.

The Bakersfield College MAIZE Club brought the celebration of the Dia de Los Muertos to the BC campus from Oct. 29-Nov. 2. Several altars were set up at the Campus Center and were decorated with pictures, candles, flowers, herbs, food, water, stuffed animals, and other relics to celebrate the departed.

Campaigns to help maximize exposure

The primary objective in any political campaign is "to maximize (the candidate's) exposure," according to Bakersfield College political science professor Cornelio Rodriguez.

Dialing 211, a new free telephone service that went into effect Oct. 1, provides callers with information about non-profit and government organizations to people. "It's a referral for general services," said a 211 operator, who wasn't authorized to release her name.

Rip takes general excellence

The Renegade Rip, Bakersfield College's student newspaper, earned general excellence in the region at the Journalism Association of Community Colleges Southern California Regional last weekend at Cal State-Fullerton. The Rip tied with Saddleback College for the top score among the 28 newspapers that entered the general excellence category, which was judged by professional journalists.

BC colloquium honors justice

Formerly known as NL Faculty Seminar Series, the colloquium was created a couple of years ago in order to give praise to scholarly accomplishments.
