Guns 'N Hoses hits ice for first time

Among a crowd of 350 people, Kern County law enforcement officials and firefighters competed in a hockey match at Rabobank Arena on Jan. 30. The event, called Guns 'N Hoses, not only gave law enforcement and firefighting officials the chance to play together, but it was also for a good cause.

"Styling Blackness" lecture points out stereotypes

"Styling Blackness: White Uses of African American English in Hollywood Film" is an R-rated lecture, speaker Mary Bucholtz warned. "The language used in it may be offensive," she told the attendees. But when the crowd replied with a laugh and no one darted for the door, Bucholtz, a professor of linguistics at the University of California, Santa Barbara, began her lecture.

Random Writers Workshop aids writers

Eight weeks ago, at Russo's Books at the Marketplace, the Random Writers Workshop had their first meeting. The workshops are hosted by author Nick Belardes on Wednesdays from 6:30 p.m. to roughly 9 p.m. Belardes was born in San Jose but later moved to Bakersfield.

Rain and wind dampen first week of spring semester at Bakersfield College

Bakersfield College students and staff were greeted by record storms as they returned to school. According to data gathered from the National Weather Service, over .80 inches of rain fell during the first week of school slowing traffic, flooding streets and forcing students to search for cover in attempts to avoid getting wet.

Honky-tonk band plays in 'spirit of Bakersfield'

Classic country music comes alive with local troubadours The Daliens. Covering artists from the golden age of country like Buck Owens and Merle Haggard, these "08ers" pay homage to the spirit and music that influenced a genre. Coming together in the latter half of 2009, The Daliens have made it their mission to bring real live honky-tonk music back to Bakersfield's bars and clubs as they did Jan.

Two artists are now joined together to bring out the beauty of downtown Bakersfield's artistic atmosphere. Deon Bell and John Moore have collaborated to reopen and reconstruct what has been well known in Bakersfield as The Basement, at a new location. The new art building is now located on the corner of Chester Avenue and 20th Street.
