The giant pile of dirt behind the Childcare Center has been a question for many students at Bakersfield College, but apparently it is there for what some call "a good cause."

"It will be a visual barrier for the new GET bus station scheduled to be constructed in the fall of 2010," said LaMont Schiers, executive director of administrative services at Bakersfield College.

"It will block the view of the children in the child care center, (for those) who are waiting for the bus."

Gail Summerford, program manager of the child development center, also believes this new plan is a good idea for the school as well as for the childcare center.

"I see that plan on the positive side," she said. "It's just lovely watching the equipment out there and seeing it come up with a good purpose."

According to Schiers, the dirt mound is dirt left over from the new tank by Levinson Hall project, and the best way to use it would be for a good cause.

"It was created three weeks ago and was a win/win scenario for the college," said Schiers.

"We are currently installing sprinkler lines in it, and once that is completed, we will cover it with sod," he added.

On a parental point of view, this new project will help children feel more secure.

"When I first saw that pile of dirt, I thought it was there for no reason," said Leticia Montes, a psychology major student.

"Now that I know why that dirt is there. I thank whoever came up with that great idea because I wouldn't like strangers looking at the children while playing, especially because my son is there."
